Dr. Sebastian Scherer

Associate Research Professor at Carnegie Mellon University’s Robotics Institute

Dr. Sebastian Scherer is an Associate Research Professor at Carnegie Mellon University’s Robotics Institute, where he leads research on autonomous aerial systems operating in low-altitude, cluttered environments.

His team pioneered breakthroughs in rotorcraft autonomy, including the first autonomous landing of a full-size helicopter and obstacle avoidance for micro aerial vehicles in natural terrain. His work has received widespread recognition, including the Popular Science Best of What’s New Award, and has been featured by IEEE Spectrum, Wired, and The Wall Street Journal.

Dr. Scherer earned his B.S., M.S., and Ph.D. in Robotics from CMU. He is a Siebel Scholar and has received multiple best paper awards and nominations. In 2016, he demonstrated autonomous inspection robots to President Obama.
